Early History of the Hockey Jersey

Hockey was the earliest of the major sports to uniformly experiment with and embrace the use of team colors, in part, due to the nature of the game and need to quickly distinguish teammates. In the early 1900s, some of the earliest organized ice hockey leagues, like the National Hockey Association (NHA) in Canada, encouraged teams to adopt uniform colors to establish team identity. Uniforms initially consisted mainly of dark, dyed woolen sweaters - blacks, grays, navys, maroons - but by the 1910s, teams began wearing more brightly colored jerseys in their specific team colors. This allowed fans and players to distinguish one team from another and made them the most vibrant teams in all of early 20th century sports. These jerseys were still simple in design, however, and typically had no numbers or logos. Some teams used their cities or regional identities to inform their team name, with clubs like the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens using logos or insignia to represent their city.

When the National Hockey League (NHL) was formed in 1917, hockey began to gain a more professional identity. Through the 1920s, teams began to develop more recognizable colors, and logos to distinguish themselves from one another. These early logos were simple and used text or basic symbols, and many of them prevail today, like the Toronto Maple Leafs' iconic blue maple leaf and the Boston Bruins' stylized "B". The team colors were often chosen to reflect local or regional symbols, such as the blue and white colors of the Maple Leafs representing the city of Toronto, or the gold and black of the Bruins reflecting the Boston area’s history.

By the 1930s, numbers on jerseys became common in the NHL, with the first team to regularly use numbers being the Montreal Canadiens in 1928. Numbers were primarily used to help identify players on the ice and were often placed on the back of the jersey. This allowed fans, referees, and coaches to distinguish individual players more easily, especially in a fast-paced sport like hockey. Jerseys started to evolve in shape as players began to wear shirts with sleeves that were more fitted, and in some cases, teams began to add a striped pattern on the arms or on the body of the jersey. This made the jerseys more visually distinctive and helped define the identity of each team.
