Evolution of the Basketball Uniform

The first basketball uniforms basic, usually loose-fitting shorts or knickerbockers, long-sleeve shirts, and high-top shoes. In the 1900s, teams were college or YMCA-based clubs, and uniforms were colored sashes or vests worn over regular clothing. Teams used basic designs, with the colors chosen to represent their school or club.

The creation of team logos followed, further helping to distinguish one team from another. This paralleled changes in other major sports. Many of the early logos were simple text, usually just the team name or initials. The NBA itself was still a long way from being established, but the uniform changes of the 1930s set the stage for the sport’s evolution.

The Addition of Numbers

The 1930s saw the introduction of numbers on uniforms. The first use of numbers in basketball uniforms came in 1931, when the University of Chicago’s basketball team became the first to wear numbers on their shirts. These numbers were used to help referees identify players on the court, especially as the teams began to grow in size.

The University of Kansas, among the first schools to establish a basketball team, were the first to begin using matching colors to distinguish themselves from other schools. This was the beginning of team branding through uniform colors, which would become a staple in basketball.

By the 1910s and 1920s, basketball had begun to grow in popularity. Teams began adopting more uniform designs, with colored jerseys and matching shorts. The concept of having team colors became more important as clubs started to develop their own identities.
