Early History of the Baseball Uniform

The first "official" uniforms were worn by the New York Knickerbockers in the 1840s, featuring white pants and blue woolen shirts with no numbers or names. Early uniforms were mostly utilitarian, reflecting the informal nature of the sport. The main goal was to distinguish players on the field, and this was often achieved by wearing matching colors, although there was no standardized design.

By the late 1860s, teams were starting to adopt colors and styles to reflect a sense of identity and unity. The most iconic early baseball uniform from this era was worn by the Cincinnati Red Stockings, who donned bright red stockings with matching caps and shirts, which became a hallmark of their team’s identity. During this time, the use of colored stockings became an early form of team branding, with teams adopting similar styles. Today's Red Sox and White Sox ball clubs are a testament to this early trend, but there were once dozens of teams using monikers like the "Blue Stockings", "Green Stockings", "Black Sox", "Yellow Sox", etc.

By the 1880s and 1890s, more teams adopted consistent team names and began wearing uniforms that reflected those identities. The use of team names on uniforms became more common, with the Chicago Cubs (then the Chicago White Stockings) being one of the earliest teams to use the city name prominently on their uniforms. The design of the uniforms also began to change, with teams using button-up shirts and pants with a more professional appearance. The 1890s saw the widespread use of billed caps, not too disimilar from modern ball caps. These replaced earlier stocking caps and other, often rudimentary headgear. Some teams even started to add their city name on the chest or across the shirt.

By the early 1900s, baseball uniforms were becoming more standardized, thanks in part to the increasing popularity of the sport and the formation of organized leagues like the American and National Leagues. The color schemes became more consistent, with teams adopting colors that reflected local traditions or historical significance. The New York Yankees, formerly the Highlanders, adopted navy blue pinstripes on white as their team colors, a look that would endure for the century. The Cleveland Indians were the first Major League Baseball team to add numbers to their uniforms in 1916, using them as a way of distinguishing players for easier identification. Numbers were initially placed on the sleeves or the back of jerseys, but it took a few years before this became a uniform practice across the league.
