Baseball Numbers

Baseball was the first American sport to adopt the use of numbers on players. In the 1890's and 1900's many teams used a combination of numbers and letters on player shirts based on their field position. The first team to use numbers on uniforms was the Cleveland Indians in 1916. They chose to number players based on their position in the batting order. This innovative move was soon adopted by other teams, and by the 1930s, jersey numbers had become the standard across Major League Baseball.

Football Numbers

In football's early years, numbers were used sporadically, but they didn’t follow a consistent system. In 1920, the Akron Pros were the first NFL team to wear numbers on their jerseys, but these were only for identification, not for the categorization we see today. It took until 1952, for the league to formally adopted a numbering system that categorized players based on position — quarterbacks wore numbers 1-19, running backs 20-49, and so on. By the 1960s, the system was solidified in the league, although it has continued to evolve.

Hockey Numbers

In hockey, the Montreal Canadiens became the first NHL team to implement numbers on jerseys in 1911. It took a while to catch on, as the second team to adopt the practice did not come about until the New York Rangers added them to their jerseys in 1928. The Rangers were notable early trend-setters in hockey uniform design, and the use of numbered jerseys then caught on quickly, and by 1930, most teams followed suit.

Basketball Numbers

In basketball, the practice of numbering players began with the New York Knicks in 1946, when they became the first NBA team to introduce numbers on jerseys. This move helped distinguish players and gave the game a more structured, professional appearance. The system became widespread across the league following the 1949 BAA NBL merger that created the NBA , and by 1952, all 10 NBA teams had adopted the concept of numbered uniforms.
