Legends in Women's Sports

Mary Lou Retton

Mary Lou Retton made history as the first American woman to win Olympic gold in gymnastics (1984), becoming a household name. Retton’s perfect 10.0 score on the vault during the 1984 Olympics helped propel the U.S. gymnastics team to global prominence and inspired a generation of young athletes.

Alice Coachman

Alice Coachman was the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She accomplished this feat in the 1948 London Olympics, where she won the high jump event. Coachman’s victory was groundbreaking, as she overcame significant racial and gender barriers to become one of the top athletes of her time.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Widely regarded as one of the greatest female athletes in track and field history, Jackie Joyner-Kersee dominated the heptathlon and long jump. She won three Olympic gold medals, one silver, and two bronze and set multiple world records over the course of her career. Her success helped paved the way for future Olympic hopefuls.

Billie Jean King

A trailblazer in women's tennis, Billie Jean King won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 singles titles, and famously defeated Bobby Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes" in 1973, helping to elevate women’s sports to new heights.

Mia Hamm

Mia Hamm is a legendary figure in women’s soccer, credited with helping to popularize the sport in the United States. She won two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals, and was named FIFA World Player of the Year twice. She's has been a passionate advocate for growing the women’s game globally.

Maartina Navraltilova

Martina Navratilova dominated women’s tennis during the 1970s and 1980s, winning 18 Grand Slam singles titles and a record 31 major women’s doubles titles. She was known for her versatile playing style and for challenging the norms of women’s professional sports.
